The Javelina or collared peccary, has coarse hair, short legs and a pig-like nose. Javelina are medium sized animals with long, sharp teeth. They can be found in the deserts and canyons of southwest Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Mexico, Central America and northern Argentina. Javelinas are herbivores, eating seeds and plants such as cacti, roots, and tubers, but they will also eat lizards, rodents and birds. Javelina are 3-4 feet long, weigh 40-60 pounds and live about 10 years (but can live up to 20 years. Do not be fooled, they may look like pigs but they are not members of the pig family. Young Javelina have red hair, while adults have a more salt and pepper color with a lighter band of hair around their neck.
